Marsha Tait, Public Policy Co-Chair, National Coalition for Literacy
Until January 2008 Ms. Tait was senior vice president of programs and services for ProLiteracy Worldwide, primarily responsible for ProLiteracy’s government relations and public policy advocacy efforts. Ms. Tait was president of Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. before its merger with Laubach Literacy International in 2002. She has recently completed her Master’s degree in public policy administration with specializations in conflict resolution and health policy at the Maxwell School of Public Affairs and Citizenship at Syracuse University, and is an independent public policy advocacy and nonprofit governance consultant. Ms. Tait’s clients include nonprofit and for-profit organizations.
Ms. Tait has been an active member of the National Coalition for Literacy for more than a decade and was its Chair in 2002 and 2003, when it reorganized and incorporated as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. She is currently the co-chair of the Coalition’s public policy committee, a responsibility she has executed since 2007. She also served on the 2000 National Literacy Summit Planning Committee (sponsored by the National Institute for Literacy). Ms. Tait is a nationally recognized speaker on the topics of public policy advocacy, health and literacy, and non-profit governance. She is also a trained facilitator and meeting planner.
Locally, Ms. Tait serves on the Onondaga County Public Library Foundation Board as its Development Committee Chair, and is a member of the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse Board of Directors. She was the advocacy group discussion leader during the formation of the Onondaga County community-wide literacy initiative. Her local nonprofit experience also includes fund-raising on behalf of The Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Museum of Science and Technology, The Salvation Army, and Father Champlin’s Guardian Angel Society. She has served as a member of the United Way of CNY Corporate Board, and the Central New York Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives Board of Directors.
Ms. Tait was senior vice president and chief administrative officer of CIS Corporation, a high-tech computer leasing and finance firm in Syracuse, NY until 1995. In that capacity, she oversaw the company’s operations and negotiated high-end financial transactions. She holds an undergraduate degree in psychology from Syracuse University. Originally a native of Rockfall, CT, Ms. Tait has lived in the Syracuse NY area for more than 30 years.
