Guest Biography

As President and CEO of ProLiteracy, David C. Harvey leads the world’s largest organization of adult literacy and basic education programs.

Mr. Harvey has a long history of working on behalf of people in need and disenfranchised communities. Before joining ProLiteracy, he was the founding executive director of AIDS Alliance for Children, Youth & Families, a national training, research, and advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. He is the author of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and monographs on topics related to health, disability, and AIDS. As a project director with the National Disability Rights Network, he directed disability and legal rights education projects, and, before that, he directed government relations activities for the National Pediatric/Family HIV Resource Center of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. He has participated in several blue-ribbon advisory panels and committees and has testified before Congress, and is quoted widely in the national media.

Mr. Harvey has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s of social work from the National Catholic University School of Social Service. Mr. Harvey began his career in Washington, D.C. as a staff assistant to U.S. Representative Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn.) and served as a research assistant to a member of Parliament, House of Commons in London.
