Thank You Dollar General Literacy Foundation!

—NCL is Awarded $150,000 Grant to Continue Technology and Advocacy

By Marsha Tait

On Thursday, May 12, The Dollar General Literacy Foundation notified the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) that we have been awarded a $150,000 grant for the coming program year.  The grant will allow NCL to continue to develop our on-line advocacy toolkit, blog, web site and use of social media to reach, train, and inform adult education advocates.

The grant will also underwrite the costs of the NCL Literacy Leadership Award event in Washington DC on September 14, and one additional US House Caucus on Adult Literacy event at a date and time to be determined.  Dollar General also announced awards totaling $4.3 million on May 12 for local adult literacy programs.  NCL wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Foundation for its continuing commitment to adult literacy.

Advocacy Symposium Photos

NCL conducted its final public policy advocacy symposium in connection with the Florida Literacy Coalition conference during the first week of May.  Jackie Taylor and Marsha Tait co-facilitated the preconference training, which was attended by thirty-five participants from across the state.  Peter Waite opened the session with discussion of the importance of public policy advocacy at the federal level.  Peter also reprised his role as the nation’s most ineffective advocate, with Greg Smith playing the patient, if dismayed, senior education staffer.

During lunch, former Congressman Lou Frey (currently with the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government) delivered an impassioned speech about the importance of adult literacy and civic engagement.  Panelists from across Florida shared information about local collaborations and partnerships with businesses, featuring Greg Smith and Sharon Hackney who discussed a state-level partnership between the Florida Literacy Coalition and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida.  Jackie and Marsha also conducted a workshop on public policy advocacy during the conference.

NCL thanks the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for its support of these symposia.
