VALUEUSA to Host Social Justice Inquiry Area
Voice for Adult Learners United to Educate (VALUEUSA) will be hosting the social justice inquiry area, now renamed as Social Change. This inquiry area addresses the question: How do we balance the increasing emphasis on workforce development with the varying educational and social needs and goals of adult students? VALUEUSA is a charitable organization working to improve our nation’s education system and empower adults with low literacy skills to realize their human potential. For more information on how you can submit a proposal for this inquiry area, visit the Proposal Information section of the conference website.
Hotel Labor Dispute
As you may know, there is a labor dispute at the Hilton where COABE is hosting its conference. Updated information can be found on the COABE website.
New Studies from the GED Testing Service
Repeat GED Examinees Study
What happens when adult learners don’t pass the GED Tests—are they likely to test again and to pass if they do? A new GED Testing Service study on GED test-takers who do not pass the GED Tests is now available to address that question. Repeat GED Tests Examinees: Who Persists and Who Passes?(2010-2) considers characteristics of those who retest (and those who don’t). The study is available at the GED Testing Service website, click on Publications and Research.
Crossing the Bridge 1 Postsecondary Follow-up Paper
Most GED passers who enter postsecondary education enroll in two-year colleges. A new GED Testing Service Research paper, GED Tests Passers in Postsecondary Institutions of up to Two Years: Enrollment and Graduation Patterns (2010-3), follows up on the Crossing the Bridge Year 1 report published last spring. This brief paper looked at enrollment patterns, demographic characteristics, and test performance for GED passers entering colleges of two years or less. The paper is available at at the GED Testing Service website, click on Publications and Research.
New from MPR: Integrating Curriculum: Lessons for Adult Education from Career and Technical Education
Integrated curriculum, increasingly used in high school CTE, combines academic and technical content and focuses on problem solving, active engagement in projects, and real-world applications of knowledge and skills. For the National Institute for Literacy, MPR examined research on curriculum integration to see if it could be adapted for adult education. Three potential approaches for adult instruction emerged from this review: course integration, cross-curriculum integration, and program integration. See the full report for details. Visit the LINCS publications section of the LINCS website for other background papers developed for the National Institute for Literacy on topics ranging from youth with learning disabilities to emerging technologies in adult education to adult English language learners with limited literacy.
