NCL Receives Dollar General Grant

Members of the House are pushing for a condition that would deny UI benefits to any worker who lacks a HS diploma or its equivalent and is not enrolled in classes to earn one. What's your opinion?
- I don’t support this provision. All eligible workers should receive UI regardless of their education level.
- I think this is the wrong vehicle for supporting people to get their GED. Congress should instead focus on increasing investments in adult education & literacy, which is provided for via WIA Title II.
- I agree that UI should be conditioned on having a HS diploma or its equivalent, or on participating in instruction to complete one.

On May 14, NCL was notified that our grant application for the 2010-11 program year was approved! The new grant will allow us to continue the highly successful regional advocacy symposia; to continue to develop and update the NCL Advocacy Toolkit and Blog; to hold the September Literacy Leadership award celebration in Washington, DC; and to host two more webinars on topics of high interest to adult education stakeholders.

In addition, the new grant will allow NCL to purchase and implement Capwiz software to track and report on the effectiveness of our public policy alerts, and to hire a consulting firm to assist us to develop a strategic plan for using social networking to reach out to ever greater numbers of new policy advocates for adult education.
