Seeking Nominations for Literacy Leadership Awards – Due May 28

Seeking outstanding adult literacy leaders! 

 

Do you know someone who has made a significant difference in the field of adult literacy, surmounted barriers, and been an inspiration for others to do so?? If so, consider nominating him or her to the National Coalition for Literacy for a 2010 award. These awards receive national coverage and are used to raise the visibility of adult literacy issues among Congressional representatives and staff, media, and educational partners. Mark your calendar for the September 15th award reception in Washington, DC.

Submit the nominee’s name, business title, and a brief explanation of why this person should be considered as an outstanding leader. If selected, we will ask for more information and complete contact and biographical information.

Please submit nominations for the 2010 NCL Literacy Leadership Awards by May 28. Nominations should come directly to me, Heidi Silver-Pacuilla, at HSilver-Pacuilla@air.org (be sure to receive an acknowledgment that I have received it).

The NCL Board of Directors will review nominations in the first week of June. Watch for more details.

  Hi All!
  A few questions are coming in about the Literacy Leadership Awards, such as:

  * Can the nominee be a refugee student who has shown outstanding initiative and determination in pursuit of English skills and cultural assimilation to practice her medical profession in the US ?

  * Can the nominee be students? Professionals? Both? Anyone in any capacity?

  Feel free to post your questions here and we’ll respond as promptly as possible.

  In answer to questions about the Literacy Leader award categories, NCL has a history of choosing a “slate” of awardees each year that represent leadership from government, programs, business, and students.

  Last year’s awardees included Sen. Patty Murray; Rep. Raul Grijalva; in honor of Sen. Ted Kennedy; Gretchen Wilson for her public advocacy; Brenda Dann-Messier for Dorcas Place; Meri-K Appy for Home Safety Council; and in honor of Calvin Miles, student advocate. (It was a GREAT event!)

  So, please think about someone who has had really made an impact at any of those levels.
