Good Morning Piedmont Triad Region!
Jackie and I are in Greensboro, NC this morning attending an advocacy planning meeting with 75 new advocates. We are learning about a new media campaign and thinking and talking about the implications for local literacy providers. We hope all the new adult literacy advocates in today's session will come back to the blog and post questions and comments in the weeks to come.

Hello Margaret,

That's fantastic news! I'm also pleased to hear how your local paper used the NCL Advocacy Clearinghouse and Toolkit to prepare their article. Could you post the link to the article here?

Thanks,

Thanks Jackie for mentioning what the Adult Literacy Resource Center of the DC Public Library and DC LEARNs did last week. We did hold a contest on DC LEARNs newly launched blog which is off of their redesigned website. We were giving away 20 copies of Fantasia's Life is Not a Fairytale, The Teacher Who Couldn't Read by John Corcoran, Life is So Good by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman and Push, a novel by Sapphire. We did get a lot of comments for the first day we launched the contest which was when we gave away Fantasia's book and we gave away all the copies of it. The others got 10-14 comments each. We didn't know what to expect, but for a newly launched blog, I think it did fairly well. We drove traffic to the blog using the library's and my own personal twitter feed, the ALRC's facebook page, emails of people who are interested in supporting adult literacy and the DC LEARNs' listserv. We did hold the contest in recognition of Adult Education and Family Literacy week and it was also a good way to get attention for the blog. We also had other people re-tweet the postings on Twitter that week about the contest including other literacy organizations in different states, and many of the comments on the postings, especially the one about Fantasia, were well thought-out and reflective.

I contacted our news paper last week and then I emailed the editor the ncl toolkit site. I gave them our latest local stats and also emailed them this site that listed our 4 TN congressional supporters. As a result, yesterday's paper had a nice big article titled" Congress Raises Adult Education Awareness". They put the entire article together. I was really pleased. We are on fall break this week, so it was going to be hard to do much with our students. The article was a great way to acknowledge the event.

Today I attended and spoke at a press conference hosted by Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) at the South Baltimore Learning Center. It was a positive event with a range of speakers, including Congressman Sarbanes, Patricia Tyler, state director of adult eduction, Todd Elliott, President of the Maryland Association for Adult Community and Continuing Education. But the stars of the events were three students, who told their stories and why adult eduction was so important in their lives. I thought this was a great way to raise awareness of adult education. It was attended by the press, including several television stations. Many of the adult students at the Learning Center were also in attendance.

Trident Literacy Association (Charleston, SC) sent releases and letter to the editor to all local papers about AEFL Week. One local e-news site listed local stats about adult literacy on their publication today, which prompted an invitation to be on a live local talk show this week.. The recognition and link isalso on our homepage, and our facebook page.

Hello!

Tell us what you have done or plan to do in order to raise public awareness of adult education and family literacy during “AEFL Week”. Here are two examples:

1) DC LEARNs and the D.C. Public Library Celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week
http://newsblaze.com/story/2009101907120000002.bw/topstory.html

“…DC LEARNs and the Adult Literacy Resource Center (ALRC) of the D.C. Public Library are honoring Adult Education and Family Literacy Week by formally announcing the launch of a redesigned DC LEARNs Web site, which now includes a new D.C. adult literacy blog. The blog will serve as a vehicle to enhance public awareness of the important role of adult education-and the connections between adult literacy and other issues, such as public health, housing, and safety….”

and

2) SARBANES KICKS OFF ADULT LITERACY WEEK
http://blog.ncladvocacy.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/SARBANES_AEFLWeek.pdf

“Congressman John Sarbanes will hold a press conference to mark the start of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week at the South Baltimore Learning Center (SBLC) recognizing the national effort to raise public awareness of adult education and literacy…”

Tell us what's going on in your area, your plans, or reports on how activities went.

Thanks ~
