Excellent suggestions!

I would also suggest that teaching English to immigrants has the potential to detoxify the often ugly debate over illegal immigration. Let's show that immigrants do study English, do want to join the national family, and do contribute to our society. The more we can put a human face on our ESL classes - and our students, the more sympathy and understanding we will find from the general public.
Or so it seems to me.
